Düsseldorf, February 2021. The boutique hotel MUZE, opening in spring 2021 and located centrally and close to the Hofgarten, the Artists Association Malkasten and the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort, banks on a blend of comfort and contemporary art. The hotel is an international pilot project, the opening of further hotels across Germany’s key cities has already been envisaged.

If walls could speak – with the new MUZE Hotel in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort this is going to become reality in early 2021. But no worries – they are not going to tell secrets. In fact, they are displaying international artists’ works. Part of the concept is to support contemporary artists and to offer them a unique and personal platform for their work. By using art MUZE aims to create an intimate atmosphere, which will help guests to relax during their stay and to become receptive to creative inspiration.

At that, MUZE works closely together with the curator Erica Vassiliou. The hotel in Düsseldorf displays the photo art by Greek artist duo Vangelis Kyris and Anatoli Georgiev (avoyagewithin.com). The series ‘A Voyage Within’ features impressive, strong portraits with an almost mystical touch. The artworks are carefully placed around the hotel.

The permanent exhibition of Vangelis Kyris’ and Anatoli Georgiev’s works is complemented by alternating other exhibitions which are on the display in the public spaces, such as the bar on the ground floor, which offers a direct view of the art with large gallery windows facing the street. With its artistic context and the direct proximity to the Goethe-Museum, the Artists Association Malkasten and the Hofgarten the concept fits in perfectly with the neighborhood. Many other artand culture locations and highlights such as art galleries in Flingern, Museum Kunstpalast, NRWForum and Tonhalle can be easily reached on foot.

Just by entering the MUZE Hotel one feels transported into a different era. The rooms and public areas have been designed in minute detail. Polished wood, pale travertine stone and the rounded lines of the furniture create a warm ambience. The entire amenity bears the hallmark of the Israeli architect Oshir Asaban (oshirasaban.com), who designed the interior of the MUZE Hotel. Oshir Asaban says: “We drew a lot of inspiration from the early 50s, but at the same time tried to create modern content. The challenge was to find the right kind of blend of relaxed elegance and comfort which is at the same time accessible and unpretentious.”

This is already reflected in the entrance area of the hotel: silver plated walls and ceilings in combination with shiny ribbed walnut woods and travertine stone floors create a special contrast. And thus, the artworks of Vangelis Kyris and Anatoli Gerogiev, some of which are hand-woven in bright colors, stand out.

The design of the light flooded rooms is also characterized by a timeless yet relaxed elegance with the appeal of the 50s. Classic, understated design elements are employed and made exclusively of sophisticated materials. The warm atmosphere of the rooms is created by a woven PVC flooring in combination with an ethnic cobalt blue rug, whilst the back of the beds and the window seats are upholstered in black, shiny leather. 50s style wardrobes with rounded corners and copper brass details are placed at the entrance of the rooms and create a vibe of bar furniture. A walnut wood desk and a leather armchair make each hotel room feel like home.

Top quality mattresses, duvets and cushions, air conditioning, a large LED TV, a desk, WI-FI, tea by Eilles (J. J. Darboven), a Nespresso coffee machine and premium bathroom products provide standard comfort for each room. One specialty: all bathrooms (with shower or bath tub) are furnished with an interactive, rimless TOTO toilet, which in combination of its especially effective ‘tornado flush’ and its extremely smooth and durable glaze is particularly hygienic.

General Manager Mario Wolgast says: “We strongly believe in the transformative power of art and creativity. Through the symbiosis of art, service, premium drinks & food and comfortable rooms we aim to create an inspiring and relaxing experience for our guests.” Mario Wolgast was born in Düsseldorf and grew up in Pempelfort close to the MUZE Hotel. By his own admission, as a youth he spent a lot of time on the soccer pitch opposite the hotel. After a long stay in Spain and a stopover as General Manager of the Max Brown Hotel Düsseldorf, he has now returned to his ‘hood’.

Yoav Itzhaki, CEO of the Brownhouse Management Group says: “We are aware that, economically, it may appear bold to open a boutique hotel during a pandemic. Of course, at this very point in time, it is still unclear when trade fairs or tourist visits can resume, but we firmly believe that Düsseldorf – being renown as a location for trade fairs and art – is the perfect location for our pilot project.”

Daniel Klasing, Business Development Director of the Brownhouse Management Group adds: “Here, business and creativity merge in a unique way.” Daniel Klasing is, just as General Manager Mario Wolgast, a born and bred ‘Düsseldorfer’ and has a deep connection with the city. After serving in numerous executive positions in the hotel business in Berlin and Stockholm he now lives in Hamburg. He reiterates that he “has always had a strong desire to accompany the opening of a hotel project in his hometown.”.

The former office block on Prinz-Georg-Straße was elaborately renovated and converted in 2020. The total space of the building measures 1,800 square meters. The total of 60 rooms are available in five different categories (XS, S, M, L, XL), are between 13 and 28 square meters large and are spread across seven floors. On the 6th floor two rooms with large roof terraces and a view onto the Hofgarten are available. The suite on the 7th floor is furnished with a panorama glass roof with a view into the star-studded night sky of Düsseldorf. From April 2021 reservations are being accepted through the usual reservation portals and booking platforms. Prices start at 89 Euros. Breakfast costs 18 Euros per person and is also available for external visitors. With regards to the choice of dishes great emphasis is put on sourcing food locally and sustainably and – whenever possible – in organic quality.

Breakfast and drinks, which are available until after midnight, are served in the bar which is located on the ground floor. Here, hotel guests from across the world, art enthusiasts, creative thinkers, connoisseurs, business travelers, trade fair guests and the neighborhood come together. From the menu, next to specialty coffee cocktails and a comprehensive selection of Gin, local craft-beer by BEER KONG can be ordered just as small bar snacks, which are being served until late. Regular culture and art events are planned to take place when it will be possible again.
